Japanese troops invade Shanghai, taking it with no losses. Japanese troops also assault Kwei-Yang in the south of China, destroying one of the Chinese INF defending it.

French bombers once again disrupt the now rallied German Combat Engineers.

Japanese troops assault Kwei-Yang again, destroying one Chinese INF and capturing it, at a cost of a DIV. There is also an assault on Peking, which captures it and destroys a Chinese INF and GAR.

British naval bombers port strike Kiel, sinking the sole surface vessel left to the Kriegsmarine, a TRS. 2 French cruisers enter the Western Mediterranean in search of an Italian convoy, but one cruiser is chased off by an Italian submarine, and the other fails to find the convoy.

Massive German ground strikes along the French front. A German Ju-86 w. pilot is downed, as are a British Hurricane 2A and a French MB152 and pilot. Then German troops assault Liége, destroying a French INF and INF DIV, and losing an INF DIV. Japanese troops assault Kun-Ming after groundstriking it successfully, taking it and destroying two Chinese INF in the process, losing an INF themselves.

In an air battle over the French Alps an Italian CR-32 and Z1007 w. pilot is shot down, as well as a French (Belgian) CR-42 w. pilot. The Chinese Air Force also sees action for the very first time, but it is unable to stop the Japanese planes from ground-striking Chung-King, which is then assaulted, resulting in the destruction of one Chinese and one Japanese INF. German troops blitz into Luxemburg, but the retreating defenders manage to put a German INF out of combat.

French troops counter-attack Rundstedt's HQ, which has been left all alone south-east of Aachen by the advancing German ground troops, destroying it handily.

Italian troops mass against the Yugoslavian partisans, destroying them. German troops assault Liége again, this time taking it. A French INF, a British INF DIV and a German INF are destroyed. The Germans also blitz north-east of Lyon, but then decline to occupy the ground vacated by the French defenders.

Partisan activity in the NEI deprive Japan of the resources from that territory for this turn.

Soviet troops race into Iraq and take Baghdad with no losses.

The remainder of the Iraqi Army, a single cavalry corps, attacks a disrupted Soviet armoured corps, but causes bo damage. There is a series of air battles along the French border, resulting in one German, one French and one British fighter being downed, including all three pilots. The British, unsatisfied with its performance, discontinue production of the Hurricane I and IIA class.

A Japanese carrier task force surprises US submarines in the Japanese Sea. One US submarine is sunk, one damaged. A major Japanese task force enters the Hawaiian Sea and attack a small US task force there. First, a Japanese submarine damages a US cruiser, then Japanese carrier planes sink the rest of the US ships after having shot down the single US carrier plane defending the task force. The US losses are 2 battleships, one cruiser and one carrier. There are also more air battles over the French border as the German bombers counter-attack. Now a German Ju-88A1 with pilot and a French MS406 go down in flames. Finally, German troops led by the German Combat Engineers assault the Maginot Line, but fail to breach the French defense. The German Engineers and a French infantry corps are destroyed.

The US fleet in Pearl Harbor moves out. One US cruiser is sunk by Japanese submarines, and another is damaged, but both Japanese submarines are damaged in the battle. The main fleets search in vain for each other. British troops assault Liége, destroying a German Panzer corps and an SS infantry corps, but do not advance, leaving the city in German hands.

Japanese naval air sink a US submarine in the Japanese Sea, while the Japanese main fleet narrowly escapes being surprised in the Hawaiian Sea. A French D500 is downed in an air battle north-east of Lyon. German troops assault Brussels without success, losing an infantry division. The Chinese Air Force goes into battle for the second time, but the result is as inconclusive as last time. Italian troops assault in Tunisia, destroying the defending French territorial corps, but losing a mountain corps and an infantry corps. Japanese armor, meanwhile, manage the war's first overrun, destroying an out of supply Chinese infantry corps. Then Japanese troops assault and take Chung-King, destroying a Chinese infantry corps and garrison corps, and losing an infantry corps.

Soviet troops, having recovered from the headlong rush into Iraq, turn on Saudi-Arabia.

The spearhead of the German Wehrmacht in Switzerland, Guderian and two armored corps, are disrupted by French bombers. British troops attack south-west of Amsterdam, supported by an amphibious invasion and shore bombardment from the Royal Navy, displacing the German troops and destroying von Kleist's HQ.

British naval air sink two German submarines and damage one. Hitler discontinues production of the oldest class of submarines. Japanese marines take Guam from Saipan. German troops, in spite of the French air raids, attack south out of Switzerland, destroying a French territorial corps and a garrison corps and advancing. They also counter-attack in the Netherlands, destroying a Polish infantry corps and retaking the area.

French troops attack Saarbrücken, destroying two German infantry corps while losing a French motorized infantry division. The advance captures a German airfield and destroys a Stuka with pilot.

German troops easily retake Saarbrücken from the French garrison corps placed there, rendering it hors-de-combat in the process.

Partisan activity in French Indo-China and Korea prevent Japan from moving resources out of these territories this turn.

A British Hurricane is shot down over Lille, killing the pilot.

The Japanese troops in China shift their weight towards the Red Chinese. In two air battles around Lyon a German He-100 and a French MB155 are shot down. Then German troops launch attacks, one on Brussels and one south-east of Lyon. The one on Brussels results in the loss of a German mechanized division in return for a British infantry corps and combat engineer division. In France the German troops advance, destroying a French infantry division and forcing the rest to retreat. Italian troops, meanwhile, assault Nice, trading an Italian infantry division for a French mountain division.

The Red Chinese make a preventive attack on the Japanese, destroying Yamashita's HQ and an infantry corps at a cost of two Red Chinese infantry corps. This places large parts of the Japanese army in China out of supply.

The US pledges to deliver another resource per turn to the Commonwealth.

German submarines enter into a naval battle with a British fleet in the North Sea. One British cruiser is damaged and one German submarine is sunk and another is damaged. Production of the class of submarine that failed is discontinued. A US Catalina patrolling the Hawaiian Sea discovers the main Japanese fleet. The Catalina escapes unnoticed. A British Wellington is shot down over Brussels. German troops assault Brussels, trading two German infantry divisions for a British. There is also an assault west of Turin, which results in the loss of a German mountain division and infantry corps.

Soviet troops, meanwhile, with massive amounts of support from the Red Air Force, assault and take Riyadh, against heavy Saudi opposition.

Carrier planes from the Japanese battle fleet outside Hawaii ground strike the US troops stationed there. A US P-35 and TBD are shot down attempting to stop them. Then three japanese divisions land on the island south-east of Honolulu, destroying a US Catalina with pilot.

There is heavy partisan activity in French Indo-China, depriving Japan of the natural resources of the region.

In a series of air battles over Brussels and the south of France a British Spitfire with pilot, a German Bf-109 and He-100, one of them with the pilot, and a French MB152 are shot down. Germany discontinues production of the He-100. German troops assault Brussles, trading two German infantry corps for a British and Montgomery's HQ. Italian troops assault in Tunisia, resulting only in the loss of an Italian infantry corps.

The Union of Soviet Socialist Republics declare war on Bulgaria, denouncing its government as the enemy of the Bulgarian people.

British troops attack and destroy Rundstedt's HQ in Liége.

An Italian M.C. 200 is shot down over Nice, and a US Hudson is shot down over Honolulu, fighting Japanese carrier planes.

Japanese troops invade Hawaii, destroying a US marine corps and infantry corps at a cost of a Japanese marine division and infantry division. The remaining Japanese troops land, taking Honolulu! Japanese troops also assault a Red Chinese infantry corps in China on the verge of splitting the Japanese forces into two parts, destroying it.

Partisans in the Dutch East Indies once again prevent the Japanes from extracting the oil they so badly want.

The Soviet Union agrees to send five more resources each turn to Germany.

Soviet troops exit Bulgaria, declaring it all a silly misunderstanding.

A German Bf-109 BC with pilot is downed over Brussels. The model is promptly scrapped. Japanese troops, heady with the great victory over the Americans on Hawaii, assault Tai-Yuan which had just been liberated by a Red Chinese infantry corps. A Japanese infantry corps perishes, but the Red Chinese are vanquished, and the city retaken. German troops again assault west of Turin, destroying a French garrison corps and a Belgian infantry corps.

French artillery bombards German troops and succesfully disrupt the German 24 Panzer corps, proving the worth of "The Queen of the Battlefield".

Italian naval air enters the Western Mediterranean in search of French ships, but is surprised by French carrier air. Even so, the Italian planes manage to damage a French cruiser and sink both a battleship and a cruiser before sending the rest of the French fleet packing. A Belgian CR42bis is downed over Nice, and a British Spitfire over Brussels. Then German troops assault Brussels, trading a German infantry division for a British motorized division. Japanese troops, meanwhile, make a blitz attack on two Red Chinese infantry corps north-east of Lan-Chow, destroying them both.

French artillery once again successfully disrupt German panzers in the south.

Japanese troops now assault and take Lan-Chow, destroying a Red Chinese infantry corps and garrison corps at a cost of a Japanese infantry corps. This, being the last city held by them, puts an end to the Red Chinese power in China, much to the joy of Chiang-Kai Chek. German troops assault Brussels again, trading a German infantry corps and division for a Polish infantry corps and a British infantry division. Italian troops attack in Tunisia, destroying a French territorial corps.

British troops blitz into the Netherlands, destroying a German mechanized corps and infantry corps.

The Bulgarian Government graciously accepts the Soviet offer of peace.

Japan declares a Vichy peace with China, which leaves China in possession of Cheng-Tu, Urumchi and the resource west of Lan-Chow.

A French MB152, a French MB155 with pilot, two German Bf-109, one with pilot, a British Spitfire II and a Wellington are downed in heavy air fighting. The British discontinue production of both downed models. A German assault on Lyon destroys two French infantry corps. British bombers make a raid on Magdeburg, causing a loss of two build points for Germany.

Germany declares war on Norway, with Swedish troops massed on the border. Italian naval air sinks three French convoy points in the Western Mediterranean. Japanese troops land on Midway, encountering no resistance. Swedish troops assault Oslo, destroying the two Norwegian infantry corps defending it at a cost of one Swedish infantry corps. Oslo is captured. A German Bf-109 E1 and a British Blenheim with pilot are downed over Brussels. Then German troops assault again, trading a German infantry division against a British garrison corps. Italian troops assault Nice, trading an Italian infantry division for Petain's HQ.

The remaining Norwegian infantry corps promptly counter-attacks the recently taken capital, but perishes in the attempt. British troops blitz into the Netherlands again, destroying a German infantry corps and a Panzer corps.

German troops assault Lyon, destroying a French infantry corps, but both Rommel's and Guderian's headquarters are lost in the battle.

British troops blitz north of Liége, destroying Rundstedt's HQ at a cost of a British infantry division.

Ships from the Royal Navy finds German submarines in the North Sea, and join battle, sinking two German submarines. The British battleship Resolution is sunk by German torpedoes, and another British battleship is damaged. Production of the Resolution class battleship is discontinued. In another naval battle in the Western Mediterranean an Italian submarine is sunk and a French cruiser is damaged. British troops assault Liége, destroying another German infantry corps and Panzer corps. A Polish infantry corps also bites the dust.

Partisans in Manchuria manage to impede Japanese production by delaying resource transport out of the territory.

The End

In the view of this chronicler (who has played the USSR), France, Japan and the USSR have been doing so well that they might be called winners. France has survived more than intact through the summer of 1941, and doesn't look to cave in any time soon, not even with Spain in the war, which by any standard of measurement is extremely well done for France. Japan has conquered China and taken both Hawaii and Samoa. It stands ready to take a significant bite out of the British eastern possessions, and is well prepared to weather a US assault in the years to come. The USSR has had the luck of avoiding a conflict with Germany, and has been arming at a very high rate for a long time while steadily expanding its holdings.

China, Germany and the US have not been doing so well. China, without support from the rest of the world, stood no real chance against a Japan at full war. Germany's war against France has been a long slow catastrophy. France is still controlling Belgium, which it liberated when Germany was busy against Poland, and for all its trying, Germany has only succeeded in taking two hexes in France. The US has lost its major ports in the Pacific, and can count itself lucky its Pacific fleet escaped destruction.

All things considered, it was a lot of fun. What I had not realized before playing was how enjoyable it would be to try to exploit the conflict between the Democrats and the Fascists as the third side.
